The Malta IT Law Association (MITLA) - www.mitla.org.mt – is a non-profit association active in the research, discussion and circulation of information on legal developments taking place internationally and within the EU with respect to ICT law and the knowledge economy. MITLA has registered an office at SmartCity Malta.

MITLA also hosted its first symposium at SmartCity entitled ‘Data protection at a crossroads: reinventing wheels or chasing windmills?’

The symposium discussed the proposed new EU general data protection regulation, which aims at bringing current data protection legislation in line with recent technological and social developments. The main speaker was Bruno Gencarelli, who heads the Data Protection Unit of the European Commission (DG Justice) in Brussels.

Speaking about the formation of MITLA, the organisation’s vice president Gege Gatt said: “The Malta IT Law Association is making its first steps in the establishment of a forum to discuss IT law matters with a wide base of members. The advancements and constant developments of information and communications technologies have truly revolutionised our society. MITLA seeks to position Malta as an international centre of excellence in ICT law by providing a specialised environment in which legal developments within the ICT sector can be studied, discussed and championed.”

MITLA, set up in 2014, brings together various legal practitioners in the fields of information and technology law as well as an array of technology professionals. The executive committee is led by president Antonio Ghio and Dr Gatt.
