I have been following with utter amazement the revelations related to the weak, faulty concrete used in the construction of Mater Dei Hospital.

For those who do not remember, this hospital cost untold millions and was operational several years after its planned opening date.

The total cost was well above the original planned expenditure and there is insufficient bed space to cater for the health care needs of a growing population.

Now, more taxpayer-funded expenditure is required to fix the results of very shoddy workmanship, which could potentially have extremely hazardous consequences in the future if the building collapses.

It is evident that standards were not maintained when the hospital was built and one wonders what was the reason for this. Indeed, were any checks performed to ensure that a high standard of workmanship was maintained?

This sorry saga shows a lack of good governance and accountability at the time of these events.

I have absolutely no doubt that no one will be held politically, financially or criminally accountable for this sorry state of affairs, and life goes on as usual for the small group of people who benefited from this white elephant project.

I can only hope that I will be proved wrong on this one, but will not hold my breath.
