It seems Frank Salt’s usual observable and perceptive contributions on important local issues were left by the wayside as the lure of lucre took over in his latest missive (May 28).

As the heading stated, let us indeed attract foreign investors. But at what cost to our little island and its current and future generations?

He belittles environmentalists for “rushing to conclusions” on the new American (?) University proposed for Marsascala’s Żonqor Point.

Did Salt read properly what those opposed to the project have been saying? Nobody was objecting to such an investment (although somewhat controversial). We are simply against the site being offered to the Jordanian developers: a vast slice of virgin land and farms when other alternatives are available in the South.

He questions whether anyone had seen the design for the new project. Has he? But no matter how aesthetically brilliant the proposed building would be, it is in the wrong place.

What he calls a “first class educational establishment” is run by the consortium that in America ranks 135th in the list of successful universities. He might think that that is good enough for Malta, as long as rich Arab students can enrol and rent some of his properties.

As for guaranteeing a huge national park, Żonqor Point had already been earmarked for a national park: all of it, not just the part left over from the university!

ODZ land is just what it says: outside development zone. An area of conservation for present and future generations to enjoy.

Yes, bring investment to the South but leave Żonqor Point alone, one of the few virgin areas left in this concrete choked island. A place where one can go to breathe fresh air and enjoy its beautiful God-given environment.
