A biomass pilot plant and a biomass research centre have been set up aimed at improving the sustainability of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) working in the building and construction sector.

The plant and centre are part of a €2 million research project part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Italia-Malta Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013, which has now been concluded.

The pilot plant, which has been set up at Eurocraft Joinery Ltd, Ta’ Qali, converts construction wood waste, including saw dust and wood shavings, into energy, thereby reducing the need for it to dispose of its waste materials.

The energy will be fed into the national energy grid to provide the company with revenue which will make the company’s operational activities more sustainable

The research centre, situated at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology’s Institute of Applied Science, is supporting local authorities and SMEs to implement sustainable consumption and production strategies which include environmental sustainability and renewable energy exploitation.

The pilot research on biomass conversion has shown how these companies can become more sustainable by turning their waste into energy, as opposed to disposing of it.

Besides Mcast, seven other partners participated in the project, including the the Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency and various Sicilian entities.
