The Sport Promotion Unit (SPU) held its first inter-school waterpolo tournament and swimming competition at the National Pool a few days ago.

Secondary school students took part in the waterpolo tournament while the swimming events were open to both primary and secondary school children.

In the build-up to the events, national team coach Karl Rizzo and assistant Anthony Farrugia trained the young players at Tal-Qroqq.

Eight teams figured in the girls’ tournament while nine sides contested the boys’ league. They were split into two age categories – Under-13 and Under-15.

The National School of Sport girls’ team won the U-13 tournament ahead of Sacred Heart school, while the U-15 trophy was won by Sta Lucia with St Monica the runners-up.

The boys from the National School of Sport emulated the girls’ team success in the Under-13 competition with Sta Venera BSS finishing second.

San Anton School were first and second in the Under-15 category.

Six schools took part in 15 swimming races that also included the 25m assisted event for Special Olympics.

All activities were sponsored by Go & Fun.
