If there is something that annoys car owners it is the lack of parking space. Unfortunately, potential parking space is sometimes unavailable only because it happens to be in front of a store or shop and not necessarily because it is being used.

There are thousands of garages which are used only during weekdays as stores, workshops or outlets and where one would risk receiving a traffic fine if one parked in front of it, even if it is not being used on that day.

Again, most shops are not used as garages but one would still find a ‘no parking’ sign on the frontage, perhaps to ensure unobstructed space for the unloading of merchandise.

Naturally, such signs are not removed during weekends.

I propose that each local council carries out an exercise to see which garages are used as stores or workshops on weekdays only, those which are also used on Saturdays and those which are used throughout the week, including Sundays, for private use.

Each garage door would then have a sticker, issued by the local council, to indicate on which day or days the space in front of each garage is free for parking.

I do realise this would mean more work for the staff of each council but I am sure that such a scheme would create hundreds of much-needed parking spaces.
