Paris, Berlin or Lisbon... the price of the flight will often determine the destination of a city trip.

However, savvy tourists should also remember that transfer costs can also have an impact on their travel budget.

Idealo examined airport transfer prices and times at 16 popular European destinations in Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

It compared a total of 19 airports and researched the expected travel times and train, underground, tram, bus or taxi fares to get to the respective city centres.

The results, which found that the cheapest transfer was between Milan Linate and the city centre costing €1.40, have been collated and displayed here.

The most expensive connection by public transport was also in Italy, as a train from Rome’s airport to the city centre cost €14.

Taxi transfers were much higher, as expected, but those valuing their privacy were best served in Lisbon, Portugal, where the fare was €15.40.

Airline passengers flying into Milan Malpensa face a much heftier €94 charge to get to the northern Italian city in a cab.

Both Malpensa and Rome have a 45-minute average transfer time, yet the historic capital costs a relatively cheap €6.48 to reach by taxi.
