You would think that keeping what you know to yourself is the best way to protect what you’re good at. This is surely not the case at Alka Ceramics, Ta’ Qali, a company that not only produces outstanding ceramics for both local and overseas markets, but is intent on passing on its love for ceramics to others.

Indeed, 15 years ago, Paul and Joan Haber started off their brainchild, the Clay Club, a project intended to instil a love of clay in young children. Every year, numerous children from the tender age of 4 right into adulthood are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and dig their fingers deep into the clay to give a form to whatever they feel like creating.

There are two grades. The first takes in the very novices to this medium, children who want to have a go but who have never touched clay before. They are immediately taken in by the joy of being able to come up with whatever they feel like doing. While the experienced tutors are on call to assist and guide, children are not influenced and are left to choose a theme and express themselves uninhibitedly.

The second part includes children who have some basic experience in handling clay. It’s pure pleasure to see their hands getting steadier and their fantasies taking more intricate shapes. Everyone excitedly awaits the moment when the numerous works are fired in the kiln and the piece takes on a steadier shape.

Soon it is glazing time and the children’s eyes dance with joy as they see colours adorn their precious works.

After 10 sessions, it’s time to acknowledge their efforts and get a certificate of attendance. This year the presentation of certificates was presided by the Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business Chris Cardona, who encouraged the 85 children who attended to keep going at it and to be proud of whatever they manage to create. He also thanked the directors of the Clay Club for making it their mission to impart to the youngsters a love for art through ceramics.

Throwing and sculpture classes are also held all year round. For more information call on 2141 4040 or 7941 4040.
