The announcement of the American University of Malta was great news but it transpired later that this investment has no direct link with any US entity. I also fail to understand the Prime Minister’s insistence on having this institution located in the south. Malta has no south, north, east or west. It is only 45 minutes by car from south to north so how can one make such a claim unless there happens to be third party land owners who stand to gain from this venture?

If Muscat really has the people of the south at heart he should first consult with the locals.

I have my doubts whether Malta can afford to give away such a massive stretch of land for foreign investment. The question is, do we really need another university?

The University of Malta has been giving our children excellent tuition and thousands of graduates have benefitted from this campus as well as from MCAST.

These are non-profit organisations and the fact that education is free to our students does not in any way mean they have a monopoly on education.

We have to be grateful to past and present governments who subsidise these organisations. Maybe the government could further expand our present university to cater for a new influx of foreign students and save on the expenditure in subsidies.

I believe that this investment has been blown out of proportion and the government should concentrate on other investments such as the White Rocks, St Luke’s Hospital, Ħal-Ferħ, Selmun Palace, and so on. These are neglected locations and developing them would be most welcome.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to the Corinthia Group for their investment in a six-star hotel.
