Opposition leader Simon Busuttil should apologise to the people for not coming out with whole truth on his meeting with a whistleblower in the alleged “works for votes” scandal in Gozo and for attacking the country’s institutions, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici told a news conference this afternoon.

“Simon Busutti has a lot to answer for and he can’t get out of giving answers using the judicial process…

“The judicial protest he filed yesterday is an attempt to intimidate a key witness….,” Dr Bonnici said.

Dr Busuttil yesterday filed a judicial protest against whistleblower Joseph Cauchi claiming he lied when testifying in court on Tuesday.

“Simon Busuttil wants us to believe that the whistleblower went to him just to tell him that the government owed him money... And he keeps on adding new pieces of information to his version.”

Dr Bonnici asked if there were any records of the meeting and who was present for it.

The minister said he had to defend the country’s institution from Dr Busuttil’s unprecedented attack.

The whistleblower, he said, only qualified for protection following a rigorous process involving the Attorney General, the police and the Courts, and the decision was taken by the AG with politicians being completely left out of the picture.

“It is unacceptable for the Opposition leader to attack these institutions,” he said.
