The government this afternoon welcomed the closure by the European Commission of two infringement procedures against Malta, relating to the closure of the Marsa power station and spring hunting.

This, it said, confirmed the government's commitment to generate cleaner energy.

The Commission also acknowledged Malta's efforts to control and eliminate abuse and the killing of protected birds, the government said.

The closure of the proceedings related to spring hunting was also welcomed by St Hubert Hunters (KSU)

KSU commended "the sterling work" done by the enforcement authorities and the firm commitment by the government and all law abiding hunters to eradicate abuse. They reiterated their pledge to work in unison with the authorities to ensure that defaulters were brought to justice.

"Throughout the 2015 spring season KSU recruited observers from amongst its ranks to observe and record migration of turtle dove and quail.

"Members were also instructed to report any cases of abuse. A report on this year’s spring hunting season will shortly be forwarded to the European Commission and all other related authorities.

"This report concludes that this year’s migration of turtle dove and quail was very poor throughout the open hunting season and picked up soon after its premature closure due to a despicable incident.

"The combined efforts of all that seek to abolish abuse resulted in the exemplary behaviour of the absolute majority of licensed hunters which has been recognised by the European Commission," it said.
