I refer to the origin of the translation of Hay Wharf as Xatt it-Tiben, and the likelihood of it being named after Lord John Hay, Commander-in-Chief in Malta 1883-1887.
Before Hay’s time the wharf was already being used for the storage of forage for commissariat and victualling yard horses, as can be seen inthe photograph.
The names of wharves in Maltese harbours generally provide clues as to their origin: Barriera, Bridge, Flagstone, Timber, Gun, Fuel, Parlatorio, Lighters, Jetties, Coal, Church, Mill, Boiler, and so on.
