There were a total of 118 adoptions of children from Russia between 2008 and last year, Family Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia told opposition MP Chris Said in reply to a parliamentary question.

The minister said there were 27 adoptions in 2008, 25 in 2009, 10 in 2010, 29 in 2011, nine in 2012, six in 2013 and 12 in 2014.

Dr Farrugia pointed out that the numbers were only for adoptions in which the government’s Aġenzija Appoġġ had been involved.

There were a number of private agencies that could also have been involved, but complete statistics could only be gleaned from the Public Registry.
