A total 12,572 permits have been issued for development in outside development zones since 1995, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this evening.

He told Labour MPs Silvio Parnis and Anthony Agius Decelis in reply to  parliamentary questions that ODZ lines were amended in 2005 and 2006.

Following the first amendment, there were 520 applications for development in the amended zones.

The largest number of applications for development ODZ was 962 in 2007.

This year, there have been 193 applications to date.

The total area outside development zones was reduced by about 92,500 square metres with the 2005 amendments and by 2.3 million square metres in 2006.
