Falcao: Radamel Falcao has been told he will not be coming back to Manchester United next season. United won a hotly-contested race to sign the Colombia striker on loan from Monaco last summer, but he has scored just four goals in 29 appearances for Louis van Gaal’s side this season. United had the chance to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis for £43.2 million, but Press Association Sport reported that the club have told Falcao they will not exercise that option.
Uruguay: Striker Diego Rolan, who has scored 15 Ligue 1 goals for Bordeaux this season, has been named in Uruguay’s 23-man squad that will defend the Copa America title in Chile next month. The 22-year-old, among several young players in a renewed Uruguay side, will be looking to partner Edinson Cavani up front in the absence of the suspended Luis Suarez and retired Diego Forlan. With Diego Lugano, who lifted Uruguay’s record 15th trophy in Argentina in 2011, also missing, coach Oscar Tabarez’s team will be captained by Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin.
Garitano: Gaizka Garitano stood down as coach of Eibar after the La Liga debutants were relegated on the final day of the campaign on Saturday despite a 3-0 win at home to Cordoba. Results elsewhere meant Eibar will return to the second division next term along with Almeria and Cordoba. The tiny Basque club looked on course for another season in the top flight around the turn of the year but their form collapsed and Saturday’s victory was their first in eight outings.
Castro: Borussia Dortmund have signed Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Gonzalo Castro for next season, agreeing a four-year deal with the former Germany international, the club said yesterday. Dortmund, who rescued a Europa League spot by finishing seventh in the Bundesliga and are in the German Cup final next weekend, are eager to bolster their squad after a mixed season and the departure of coach Juergen Klopp. The 27-year-old’s arrival comes as Germany midfielder Ilkay Guendogan prepares to leave.
