Q: I have a query regarding a flight ticket I purchased through a local travel agency two months ago. I purchased it with the intention of providing voluntary missionary service in Kenya.

The flight ticket was purchased for €850. Unfortunately, due to the current unsafe situation in Kenya, I decided not to put my life at risk and cancel my booking.

When I contacted the agency and asked for a refund, I was told that, legally, I was only entitled to a refund of the taxes paid when I bought the ticket.

I would like to know if this is really the case even though I have a legitimate reason why I decided not to travel?

A: Despite the fact that you have a very valid reason why you decided not to proceed with the planned trip, the travel agency is not legally obliged to refund you the flight ticket.

Unless your trip to Kenya was insured and the insurance policy covers the reason why you opted not to continue with the trip, legally, you do not have the right to request a refund of the flight ticket.
