The list of athletes for the upcoming Iceland GSSE, issued yesterday, features a number of new faces and others who are making a return to the Games.

The MOC has drawn up a list of 58 in 10 different sports – athletics, basketball (women), beach volley (women), golf, gymnastics, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis and tennis.

A major novelty is the selection of emerging talent Charlotte Wingfield.

She took the track and field scene by storm at the National Championships last week as the England-based sprinter established herself as the new Malta champion in the 100m after setting a national record of 11.73secs.

The previous best 100m time belonged to Diane Borg (11.89).

Wingfield’s rise to prominence has convinced the MOC to draft the20-year-old in the sprint races at the Iceland Games.

Kevin Moore, winner of successive GSSE gold medals in 400 metres, will also compete in the 200m this time.

Another notable return for Team Malta is that of basketball player Rebecca Thoresen.

She has been included in Angela Adamoli’s squad for the Games.

Andrew Borg, Daniel Holland and John Junior ver Elst Micallef will make Team Malta history as they will be involved in the first ever golf tournament at the GSSE.

Elsewhere, judokas Georgi Ata-nasov and Alice Gina Battistino will make their first GSSE appearance in Iceland when joining the more-experienced Marcon Bezzina, Jeremy Saywell, Murman Korchilava, Isaac Bezzina and Joanna Camilleri as the judo group will seek to improve on the two silver and five bronze medals of two years ago.

In swimming Andrew Chetcuti, winner of two silver medals and a bronze in Luxembourg, will be joined by the ever-improving Julian Harding, Nicola Muscat, Michael Umnov and Matthew Galea.
