A man was this afternoon charged with the animal cruelty after he allegedly threw his dog into a well.

Before Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona, Eugenio Galea, 56, from Senglea, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty just after midday on Friday. The animal was saved thanks to prompt action by the police.

When the magistrate warned that he was going to jail him, he retracted his guilty plea and instead pleaded not guilty.

The man, who said he worked for the local council, was granted bail against a €1,000 personal guarantee.

Police Inspector Josric Mifsud prosecuted while lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace appeared for the man.
