Public Broadcasting Services CEO Anton Attard should resign immediately after Malta’s “abysmal” showing in yesterday’s Eurovision semi-final, according to V18 chief Jason Micallef.

“He has to shoulder the responsibility for this result. This was not an isolated incident. Malta has had a series of poor performances in the Eurovision under Anton Attard’s leadership and this raises questions,” a fired up Mr Micallef told Times of Malta.

The V18 head was speaking after uploading a comment on his personal Facebook account, lambasting Mr Attard as “the one” responsible for Malta not reaching the final of the Eurovision.

Mr Micallef said he had expected to be questioned about his outburst, and came prepared with research he had conducted on Malta’s past performances.

He said Malta had not qualified for two out of the past five festivals. He drew comparisons with PBS under Norman Hamilton’s watch, which had seen Chiara come in at a “very respectable” third place.  Under Grace Borg’s tenure, Chiara had done even better landing in at second place.

Asked what he would do differently, Mr Micallef insisted he had no aspirations to be appointed PBS CEO. However, he said many top artists and composers were being left out of the process.

This, he said, also “raises question marks”.

Contacted by Times of Malta, Mr Attard preferred not to comment.
