US ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley was tended to by soldiers after she was ‘injured’ this morning during an Armed Forces of Malta simulation of emergency medical response.

The exercise took place at the AFM’s Maritime Squadron in Haywharf bringing to an end two weeks of training by the US Defense Institute for Medical Operations.

The training was funded by the International Military Education and Training Programme.

A total of 48 AFM officers were trained in basic first responder and lifesaving skills.

Students learned more advanced techniques for emergency medical care, managing critically injured patients and stabilising traumatic injuries allowing transport to definite care facilities.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said that more than 170 AFM members have enhanced their specialised capabilities and their military career prospects thanks to an investment of more than €660,000 in training abroad.

He said that professional and technical training was provided in military academies in over 20 different countries including in the USA, Italy, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Morocco and England.
