Fireworks are expected this evening as Labour MPs Marlene Farrugia and Deborah Schembri meet on TVM's programme Xarabank, only days after their heated exchanges in Parliament when Dr Farrugia reiterated her vociferous opposition to the site chosen for the American University of Malta.

Contacted by Times of Malta, in the wake of reports that the PL had objected to Dr Farrugia’s presence, the outspoken MP clarified that no one from the party had ever told her not to attend.

She said she had accepted presenter Peppi Azzopardi's invitation to the programme earlier this week.

However, she was subsequently contacted by the government’s media office to attend a meeting at 9am today but had to postpone it to later today due to work commitments.

She noted that for some reason the PL still opted to send its representative even though she was part of the Labour parliamentary group.

“At no point in time was I told not to attend, but the PL is sending a representative,” she said.

“I will represent those people who voted for our movement, whose electoral programme pledged to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable development. For them, I was obliged to accept the invitation, as otherwise I would be letting them down,” she said.

Shadow Minister Marthese Portelli will be representing the Nationalist Party.
