Charles Xuereb is dead keen to remove the George Cross from our flag. His doctrine seems to beone sided.

What do we have in Malta that is not the direct effect of some form of colonialism? The very flag itself was a corner from the colours of Count Roger the Norman.

Roger introduced an era of feudalism when our islands were leased to overlords who used the Maltese as serfs. This lasted until the Maltese rose up to oust Count Gonsalvo Monroy which so impressed Alfonso V of Aragon that he promised never to grant the title to a third party.

In 1530 Emperor Charles V of Spain, forgetting that promise, gave the islands to the Knights Hospitaliers in perpetual lease, thus reconfirming the feudal system of our islands.

With all the glitter, the Knights were just another set of feudal lords who used the Maltese people to their advantage. The Maltese were never considered to be of any value. Thus the glorified eight pointed cross of the Order is another symbol of oppression.

The George Cross is best appreciated by those who, like me, lived through the harshest years of World War II. By no means can it be considered to indicate any colonialism.

It is a sign of great honour.

If Xuereb wants to rid Malta of all that is colonialist, he has to draw up a detailed list of what he has in mind.

The crux of this topic is: forgetting the red and white, what shall a truly national flag of Malta look like?
