Public land shouldn’t even be an option after the Malta tagħna lkoll promise, especially when several heritage sites serve no purpose and are rotting further by the day.

A wiser choice and an ideal location for the proposed American University of Malta would be Cottonera’s Fort Salvatore, a magnificent yet totally neglected historical treasure located next to De La Salle and St Edward’s colleges.

Although it suffered severe structural damage in the 1980s when then Prime Minister Dom Mintoff decided it should be used as a concrete factory, only for it to be abandoned and left to rot since the factory’s closure in the early 1990s, it can still be saved.

This could be a golden opportunity.
