Every single hard stone slab on the Strait Street steps will be numbered and put back in the exact same place, as part of a project to upgrade water and electricity provision to residents.

Addressing a press conference on site this afternoon, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said the project was expected to cost around €500,000 and was aimed at upgrading residents' basic infrastructure.

The works will begin next Monday.

The government is conducting a study to find ways to renovate several artisan shop signs on the street.

New lighting, resembling the street’s original lanterns will also be installed.
