(Adds MUMN statement)

Three bids have been submitted following a government call for expressions of interest for the running of the new Gozo hospital and the reopened St Luke's Hospital.

The bids were opened this morning in Projects House, but only the names of the bidders were given to the media - and only after insistence from the reporters present.

The bidding companies are Vitalis Global Healthcare/Bluestone; Image Hospitals and BSP Investments Ltd.

The call was issued by Projects Malta Limited on behalf of the Government. Prospective investors were asked to submit proposals for the concession for the management and operation of healthcare and ancillary services at St Luke’s Hospital, Karin Grech Rehabilitation Hospital and Gozo General Hospital.

The government said in a statement later this investment would lead to the creation of new jobs, the elimination of discrepancy between Mater Dei  and the Gozo hospitals, an increase in beds and around 300 students from a world famous college in Malta.

When it announced its plans two months ago the government had said this would be a €200 million healthcare project which would include services for the Maltese and for medical tourism. At the time it had also said Barts would open a medical school in Gozo.

In a statement this evening, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses said it requested an urgent meeting with the government as its members were preoccupied about the possibility of having a private management once the proposed investment was completed.
