Rugby Sevens: Fiji were crowned sevens world series champions for the first time in nine years yesterday as the US won the final tournament of the season at Twickenham. Two tries from Savenaca Rawaca secured Fiji’s 19-7 win over South Africa in the quarter-finals to guarantee their second world title and although they lost to Australia in the semis they beat England 26-12 in the third-place play-off to end on a high. The US team overpowered Australia 45-22 in the final.

Basketball: Real Madrid won a ninth Euroleague title and their first since 1995 after American guard Jaycee Carroll inspired them to a 78-59 win over Olympiakos Piraeus last night. Carroll stood out in an enthralling final, scoring 11 of his 16 points in the third quarter during a 13-3 Real run which gave the Spanish giants the lead for good after Olympiakos had overturned an 11-point deficit. Also yesterday, CSKA Moscow beat Fenerbahce Istanbul 86-80 in the third-place match.

Swimming: Michael Phelps endured a difficult return to the 200 metres butterfly on Saturday by finishing a distant seventh, more than three seconds behind the winner, at the Arena Pro Swim Series meet in Charlotte, North Carolina. Competing in the event for the first time since the 2012 London Games, the 18-times Olympic gold medallist came home in a time of 2:00.77, more than three seconds adrift of winner Chase Kalisz.

Cricket: Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has announced his retirement from one-day international cricket – less than two months after he helped his country win their fifth World Cup title. Haddin’s 126th and final ODI appearance was the seven-wicket victory over co-hosts New Zealand in Melbourne on March 29 and the 37-year-old, who made his debut against Zimbabwe in 2001, quits the 50-over international format having claimed 170 catches and 11 stumpings.
