Knights queued as they waited for their turn to enlist themselves in an operation aimed at withstanding an upcoming siege on Malta.

This was a re-enactment held yesterday morning in Vittoriosa as part of a series of activities to mark the 450th anniversary of the Great Siege of 1565, when the Ottoman Empire tried to invade the island.

The knights, together with Maltese civilians, withstood the siege and expelled the invaders.

Heritage Malta, the Arts Council Malta and the Vittoriosa local council yesterday launched ‘Dawn of the Great Siege – life at Sea 2015’, the first of a series of events marking the anniversary.

The activities yesterday were held within the Malta Maritime Museum and around Vittoriosa Square. Crowds relived the medieval atmosphere recreated in these areas, particularly with the participation of actors in period costumes.
