Basle: The point from a goalless draw with Young Boys was enough to guarantee Basle their 18th Super League title. The side from St-Jakob Park were 11 points ahead of second-placed Young Boys ahead of yesterday’s meeting and the gap remained the same at full-time, meaning the Bern outfit can no longer catch the leaders.
Blackout: John Carver will impose a media blackout on his Newcastle players in one final bid to complete their Premier League relegation escape. Saturday’s 2-1 loss at already-relegated QPR means Newcastle will go into their final-day match against West Ham at St James’ Park still at risk of the drop, only two points clear of 18th-placed Hull. “I’ll tell the players to keep away from the TV and going online, to keep them focused on preparation,” said Carver.
Banned: Sheffield United midfielder Jose Baxter and Wolves goalkeeper Aaron McCarey have both failed drugs tests and been placed under suspension, their clubs have announced. A statement from Sheffield United announced that “traces of a banned substance” were found when Baxter underwent FA testing. Wolves said McCarey had failed a test for “a non-performance enhancing substance”.
Ingolstadt: Little-known In-golstadt secured their first ever promotion to the Bundesliga yesterday after beating Leipzig 2-1 for the biggest achievement in their short 11-year history. The Bavarians, officially the youngest club in the pro leagues after being formed in 2004, are now seven points clear at the top with a game to spare. Second-placed Darmstadt, on 56, and Kaiserslautern and Karlsruhe, both on 55, will battle it out for the other automatic spot and the third place that leads to a promotion play-off.
