Mortal Kombat X is the newest instalment of one of the most established fighting game franchises still in operation. The Mortal Kombat series has been running for a couple of decades and each game has built upon the lore, mechanics and affection we have for the characters involved.

At its heart, Mortal Kombat X is a gore-filled fighting game that delivers action, laughs and a serious challenge. It also has one of the most established character listings on any fighting game.

The game enjoys massive improvements in gameplay and animation. Movements are more realistic, special moves look more impressive and everything looks as good as a current generation game should. It plays smoothly too. Land a hit and it looks real while special effects are instantly gratifying.

One of the highlights of Mortal Kombat X and indeed, the Mortal Kombat series is the fatality finish. This showcases the improved visual mechanics perfectly and is just one of many in which this new game excels.

Variations are a big part of Mortal Kombat X and add some depth to gameplay. Of the 24 playable characters, each has three variations. They grant different special moves and bonuses that are disparate enough to need thought before starting the match. This adds a lot of variation to play and requires planning in your execution.

Rather than choosing your favourite character and getting on with a match, you now also have to select a variation to match your own playing style and that of your opponent.

Mortal Kombat X is fast-paced and frenetic. Your blocks have to be timed perfectly, your combos have to be exact and your play has to be on point or you will lose. It’s a challenge, but one that delivers enough rewards to make you want to master it. The variations require research and experimentation but once you’re comfortable with your character of choice it’s game on.

With a solid story mode, new characters, smoother mechanics and better graphics, there’s nothing not to like about Mortal Kombat X.
