Is waste management a problem on your campus?

There is not enough awareness regarding waste management. There are events to promote this once in a while but this is not enough. Also, there are not enough waste management sites around campus. Kristina Saliba, B. Communications.

If waste management on campus is a problem, then it is not visible. Most classrooms, lecture halls and public spaces have adequate bins and most areas are kept quite clean in general.

Perhaps the culture of using recycling bins and waste separation is not as ingrained among students as it should be, but I would not consider cleanliness a pressing issue. Jessica Arena, BA English (Hons).

Waste management on campus was a problem but it is now improving. While staff do their best to ensure that the institute remains clean, there are still problems that can be avoided and less waste generated.

Recycling bins are used for general waste but unfortunately some students still do not use them.

To improve this, the Mcast Institute of Applied Science (IAS) student organisation, in collaboration with the cleaners, are working on a green campaign to raise awareness and encourage working together to improve waste management and to recycle waste. Danika Formosa, Mcast IAS.

How relevant is it to celebrate Earth Day in today’s world?

Jessica ArenaJessica Arena

It does make a difference for some people, but most people continue with their usual lifestyle. With the right marketing, this might help future generations. Kristina Saliba

I think Earth Day remains relevant as a reminder that global environmental protection is not an imaginary milestone people should aim to achieve in a singular event and then promptly move on from, but rather to think of it as an ongoing activity that requires our participation on a constant and dedicated basis. Jessica Arena

Earth Day is an important event but there is lack of information on this celebration. So unfortunately not many people seem to be aware of it. Danika Formosa

Do you agree that it’s not easy being green?

In some places waste is collected once a week, which makes domestic waste separation more difficult as waste accumulates and most people would like a clean home with no bags in the way. Kristina Saliba

Initially, going green isn’t easy and requires financial backing and a concentrated effort to break habits, but the long-term benefits outweigh the cost. Jessica Arena

I do agree to some extent. There are various reasons why people are not green but in actual fact it is not that difficult. Danika Formosa
