Equipment has been installed at Magħtab that will control in a more environmentally-friendly way the by-products released as organic waste decomposes.
The plant is composed of a series of digestion tanks into which organic waste and water are poured.
As the waste decomposes, biogas and compost are formed. The equipment extracts the biogas and pressurises it, using it to stir up the contents of the digestion tanks and prevent sediment from forming.
The logistics involved in the installation were complex as some of the pipes measured 12m in length, that were welded into 18m-long sections which then had to be lifted into a vertical position before being lowered into the tanks.
The equipment was installed by Vassallo Builders at the new Malta North Waste Treatment Plant as part of its contract with WasteServ Malta Ltd.
The contract is being jointly executed with Portuguese partners Efacec Engenharia e Sistemas and German partners BTA International.
