The collaborative project Schpongle will be headlining this year’s Sunscape Festival in Gozo with a DJ set by Simon Posford. The outfit is credited with creating psybient, a music genre that fuses world music with psychedelic trance and ambient.

Made up of the 44-year-old electronic producer Posford and Australian musician Raja Ram, now in his 70s, Schpongle is probably one of the most improbable collaborations to hit the electronic music sphere.

Schpongle’s music is known for the complex layering and wildly eclectic styles that go into every single track. The duo burst on the scene with their debut album Are You Schpongled in 1998. Posford and Raja Ram are currently working on a sixth studio album.

Sunscape Festival’s line-up this year includes South African electronic band Goldfish, electronic music stars Azimute, Livio & Roby, Konrad Black, Rick Maia, DJ Herr, DJ Fabio, M.A.N.D.Y., DJ T, Fur Coat, The Mole and Maltese artistes Cygna and Stimulus Timbre. More names are still being announced and there will also be a stage hosting drum ‘n’ bass artistes.

Touted as “Europe’s most intimate island festival”, the event has already attracted the attention of major international media, mak-ing it on Shortlist.com’s list of “Ultimate European Boutique Festivals” this year.

An electronic music festival by night, Sunscape turns into an arts celebration by day, with a programme of creative activities.

Sunscape Festival takes place between July 3 and 6 at Ramla Bay. Tickets are available online.
