The Malta Amateur Athletics Association will be staging their annual national track and field championships at Marsa today and tomorrow.

The organisers are expecting a good level of performance especially in view of the fact that all foreign-based athletes, including Kevin Moore, Rebecca Camilleri, Giselle Camilleri and Charlotte Wingfield, are set to take part.

Some of the events will be more interesting to watch as many athletes will be reaching their peak form during the championships.

Moore looks a safe bet in the 400m but all eyes will be on the runners-up positions as no clear favourite emerges in the 800m race. This event could well produce a surprise winner at the athletics stadium this weekend.

The 1,500m race will surely develop into a keen tussle between Herrera and Spiteri.

In the women’s 100m, the technical level will be quite high with Wingfield and Rebecca Fitz the strong contenders for the top spots.

In field events, jumpers Rebecca Camilleri and Rebecca Sare are expected to dominate while throwers Luke Farrugia, Bradley Mifsud and Antonella Chouhal are backed to maintain the progress shown in recent months.

On each day of the championships, the programme of events starts at 1.30pm.
