Retail sales in Malta saw the biggest increase among all EU countries for the second consecutive month, the Labour Party said.

It said in a statement that, moreover, Central Bank figures indicated that at the end of January, bank deposits reached a record €9.2 million showing that in two years Maltese families had saved 19 per cent more than they did in the previous five years.

The party was replying to a statement by the Nationalist Party issued earlier today appealing to the government to immediately address the fight against poverty and social exclusion.

Shadow minister Paula Mifsud Bonnici, and spokesmen Robert Cutajar and Stephen Spiteri said that the situation was worsening according to NSO figures.

The PN, they said, committed itself to work with all of goodwill to ensure that the standard of living of Maltese and Gozitans improved.

In its reply, the Labour Party said the government was to continue to work for progress to be registered by everyone.

Unlike the Opposition, which spoke but failed to take action, the government had been working since its first day introducing measure to benefit those in most need.
