Asenjo: Villarreal have confirmed goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo has undergone successful reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The 25-year-old suffered the injury during his team’s 1-0 home defeat to Atletico Madrid on April 29. Asenjo is expected to be sidelined for six months.

Saunders: Chesterfield have appointed Dean Saunders as their new manager following Paul Cook’s departure for Portsmouth. Cook left the Spireites on Tuesday after guiding them to the League One play-offs, where they were beaten 4-0 on aggregate by Preston in the semi-finals. Chesterfield announced Saunders had joined on a two-year contract.

Duff: The A-League is set to increase its salary cap limits for clubs next season but former Ireland international Damien Duff will not be around to benefit after leaving Melbourne City yesterday. The 36-year-old winger was one of five players to exit the Man. City-backed club following last week’s semi-final exit to Melbourne Victory.

Bordeaux: Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol has been handed a double boost after two of his midfield stars signed contract extensions at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. Czech Republic international Jaroslav Plasil will remain with the club until 2017 while Younes Kaabouni has committed his services until 2018. “I am very happy and very proud to extend the adventure with the Girondins,” Plasil, 33, said. “I arrived here six years ago, I love this club and all the people who work here.”

Quagliarella: Torino’s slim hopes of European qualification have been dealt a further blow after striker Fabio Quagliarella was ruled out for the rest of the season with a thigh injury. The 32-year-old was withdrawn during the second half of the 5-1 defeat to Genoa on Monday and scans have revealed he will miss the remainder of the campaign.
