The player status reform will come under the spotlight this afternoon as the Malta FA are holding an Extraordinary General Meeting to present the proposed amendments for ratification by the council members and delegates.

After a thorough consultation exercise that began over a year ago, the Malta FA have drafted a series of amendments as part of a wide-reaching reform that is likely to change the local footballing landscape in so far as the rights and obligations of players and clubs as well as transfer compensation are concerned.

The reform revolves around five main areas, namely the status of the professional player, the amateur player and amateur football, player transfer and training compensation, the judicial process and club licensing and financial fair play.

Some of the most significant proposals include the removal of all existing salary caps for full-time and part-time professional players, a revision of the transfer parameters for out-of-contract players and the introduction of a training compensation system.

Furthermore, the EGM is also expected to approve a proposal to increase the number of foreign players from five (on the pitch) to seven.

Under the current regulations, which came into force only two years ago, Premier League clubs are allowed to have five foreign players on the field at any given time and one on the bench for a maximum of six in the matchday squad.

The proposed amendment is for clubs to have up to seven foreigners on the field but the remaining 11 must be homegrown.

The EGM will be held at the Centenary Hall, starting at 4pm.
