Mexico: Mexico named their 23-man squad for next month’s Copa America on Monday, with coach Miguel Herrera leaving out Real Madrid striker Javier Hernandez and several other European-based players with an eye on the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July. PSV Eindhoven’s Andres Guardado, Porto pair Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes, and brothers Giovani Dos Santos and Jonathan Dos Santos of Villarreal were also among those left out but are expected to play in the July 7-26 Gold Cup.

Caceres: Injury will keep defender Martin Caceres out of the Uruguay squad for next month’s Copa America, coach Oscar Tabarez announced yesterday. Juventus defender Caceres will not recover in time from an ankle injury and will miss the tournament that begins in Chile on June 11. Attacking midfielder Gaston Ramirez was also left out of the 27-man squad that will be cut back to 23 on the eve of the tournament.

Prodl: Werder Bremen defender Sebastian Prodl has announced he will leave the club after seven years at the end of the season. Prodl joined Bremen in the summer of 2008 from Sturm Graz and helped them win the DFB-Pokal the following year. The 27-year-old has missed much of this season because of a knee injury and yesterday revealed he would be moving on.

Villar Llona: FIFA is set to restore Spanish vice-president Angel Villar Llona to his position as head of referees despite the 65-year-old still facing sanctions from ethics investigators as part of their inquiry into World Cup bidding. Villar Llona has been told that he will regain the position later this month to replace Britain’s outgoing FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce, according to sources close to the world governing body. The move is being seen in Spain as a reward for Villar Llona helping to campaign for Sepp Blatter to be re-elected for a fifth term as FIFA president.
