The 68-year-old man whose body was found floating in Cospicua’s Dock No 1 on Friday was unable to swim and died as a result of drowning, a post-mortem examination has concluded.

The autopsy carried out yesterday morning found no signs of foul play or violence on the body.

Sources said that it is still not clear how Anthony Azzopardi, from Ħamrun, ended up in the water, since nobody appears to have witnessed the incident.

However, court experts involved in the ongoing magisterial inquiry are in the process of retrieving any CCTV footage from the area.

Mr Azzopardi’s body was found floating face down in the dock on Friday.

Teenagers Christian Martin and Dynalee Vella spotted the body while they were walking along the promenade and informed police.

Four officers followed them to the scene, and two of them jumped into the water to retrieve Mr Azzopardi but he was already dead.

Sources said that police officers recognised Mr Azzo-pardi because he was familiar to them from the days when he used to work as a parking attendant in the Valletta ditch that was known as the Yellow Garage.
