The flags marketing the upcoming socio-political satire Sibna ż-Żejt have had people wondering what is really happening and whether we might really be celebrating the finding of oil.
The ploy, theatre production company Staġun Teatru Malti said, worked wonders with the Manoel Theatre, where the play is being staged and the producers themselves being flooded with phone calls asking for an explanation.
This creative use of flagpoles around the island has garnered even more interest in the production.
The script is a satirical comedy written by Wayne Flask and takes place in 2036, where Malta strikes oil under the Addolorata Cemetery.

However, nothing is quite that simple, with Flask’s satire taking shots at practically everybody who is somebody in our socio-political realities.
The play runs for a total of eight performances, including a matinee on Sunday. The cast includes some of Malta’s best known comedic talent, including Mario Micallef, Simon Curmi, Ronald Briffa, JP Busuttil, Manuel Cassar, Gilbert Formosa, Clive Piscopo, Luke Dalli, Andy Catania, Triccas, Brussels-based actress Antonella Axisa and Peter Busuttil. Sean Buhagiar, who directed last year’s smash hit Jiena Nħobb, Inti Tħobb, directs.
Sibna ż-Żejt shows on Friday, Saturday, next Sunday and May 21, 22, 23 and 24 at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta. Tickets are available from the theatre box-office or online.
