Air pollution costs so much in lives and money, yet, what is being done about it?

Designing cycle paths and bus stops is just not enough.

Trying to help people with a heart condition is good but not good enough.

Is there not one politically-engaged person in Malta who can be brave enough to stand up and say: the cars are the killers.

There are far too many vehicles in this small island.

I am sure there are long-term plans to solve this difficult problem but a national debate has to be started, raising different points.

Do you offer free bus transport? If that happens, how many would sell their private cars? Have a more effective school transport system and ensure better cooperation between the schools?

Enforce stricter regulations about taking old cars off the roads, possibly giving a bonus to those who do?

Limit the number of cars? Allow a famliy to have only one car and then impose much higher taxes and heftier bills for the second vehicle?

This is, of course, a very difficult matter to deal with politically but there are health and wealth to gain.

Once electric cars and their batteries become cheeper, that would be a good opportunity.

Can Malta lead by making such radical changes to prove to the rest of Europe and the world it is possible to make a difference for the benefit of their people? This would attract more tourists to visit and foreigners to buy houses and contribute to the economy. Otherwise, more expats would, like us, be thinking of returning home.
