I am writing to express my various concerns about the development of a shooting range next to Mount St Joseph Retreat House, in Mosta. I would like to stress that I am very much against this disturbing development.

I was very shocked at the news.

I cannot understand why, in the light of the latest report by the European Environmental Agency that clearly states that 90 per cent of the geographical area of Malta is considered to be noise polluted (Times of Malta, January 19) and that about 92 per cent of the Maltese feel annoyed by excessive noise (October 23, 2010), the government has managed to almost reach an agreement to grant a substantial piece of land for the development of a shooting range.

To add insult to injury, the government’s decision fell on a piece of land next to the island’s most popular retreat house, a place that is very much sought for silence, prayer and reflection.

Furthermore, I am also very disappointed that another piece of natural land is being taken for development.

This is only one instance in a series of continuous deduction of our natural heritage, which is, unfortunately, very limited in our small island. The automatic excuse is investment.

This, I think, continues to undermine this government’s environmental credentials, which are, unfortunately, undervaluing the true characteristics of this country.

I would very much like to make an appeal, in a special way, to the government and Mepa to take heed of the lament of the thousands of Maltese who have our whole well-being at heart and to implore and beg the government to be more transparent and responsible when it comes to the protection of our environment, our roots and welfare.
