Medical student Erika Babatunde takes a look at the ingredients found in skincare products that can boost the health and appearance of our skin.

The average person uses many different skincare products every day. However, many are not fully aware of the importance of maintaining strong and healthy skin. Sometimes we may take our skin for granted, thinking it can just look after itself.

The best approach to supporting the skin’s health is to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating heathy and nutritious food, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, not smoking or drinking large amounts of alcohol, and using sun protection.

We can also look after our skin by using the right skincare products. There is a multitude of products that do a variety of things, nevertheless most people’s health and cosmetic concerns regarding the quality of their skin can be addressed in three main categories:

• Maintaining moisture and avoiding dry skin;

• Treating acne-prone skin;

• Having ‘glowing’, even-toned skin that is not dull or sallow.

Despite the various products available, in reality it comes down having ingredients that supports the skin. Here is a list of some of the most important ingredients in the various types of skincare products that are ideal to target the above areas of concern.

Maintaining moisture

Ceramides: These are naturally occurring molecules in the body and are found in abundance in the cell membrane of the outer layer of the skin. Their main function is to act like glue between the cells and maintain a moisture barrier. Low levels of ceramide are associated with dry, scaly skin, and an increased susceptibility to environmental pollutants and irritants. Look for ceramides as an ingredient in day/night creams, generic moisturisers and serums.

Glycerin and glycols: These are humectants, made from fats and sugars. Their main effects are that of absorbing and retaining water. Look for this ingredient in hydrating soaps and cleansers as they are not harsh and don’t strip the skin of its moisture. You can also find these in normal moisturising creams.

Hyaluronic acid: Naturally found in the body, hyaluronic acid has lubricating effects that keep elastin and collagen hydrated. It can be found in the form of pure serums as main ingredient or in creams as an active ingredient.

Essential fatty acids: These fatty acids are not generated by the body, and need to be derived from diet or through application to skin. Examples include avocado, olive and almond oil, as well as shea butter. These ingredients are natural and can be found almost anywhere. They can be sold as part of a skincare product or be used on their own for maximum benefit.

Acne treatments

Salicylic acid: This dries out acne and also promotes cell renewal and wound healing to encourage the fading of acne scars. It is mostly found in toners and cleansers but also seen in a form of a cream.

Tea tree oil: An essential oil that has antimicrobial properties. It can be bought as an oil but may need to be diluted before use. Also, a number of commercial products including toners, cleansers, soaps, serums and scrubs contain tea tree oil.

Beta glucans: These are found in the cell walls of plants. They can be used to address many skin conditions as they have biology defence modifier, that is, they boost the immune system to fight against microorganisms and aid wound healing. They come in the form of gels, creams and serums.

Glowing, even-toned skin

Azealic acid: Found in wheat and rye, this acid has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and is especially useful for those suffering from rosacea. It can also be used to treat dark spots and hyperpigmentation due to its anti-inflammatory and lighting effects. This ingredient can be found in gels, and in the form of a superficial peel.

Lactic acid: Derived from milk, this acid is mostly used as a peel for those who have sensitive or irritation-prone skin. Its effect includes the breaking down of keratin and removing dead skin cells. It is also found as an ingredient in some creams.

Tartaric acid: Derived from grapes, tartaric acid is a mild exfoliator and antioxidant that has great skin-brightening effects. It can reduce age spots and leave the skin more even toned. This ingredient can be found mostly in serums.

Using a combination of the various active ingredients will leave the skin feeling and looking great. But is it always important to not over-use products, especially speciality products for the treatment of skin condition as they can cause the skin to become sore and irritated. Sometimes the skin needs a break and time before it can really reach its full potential.
