Operations at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport have been suspended because of a fire in a restaurant which has spread to most of Terminal Three, which is used for international flights.

The blaze broke out shortly after midnight and spread to areas such as the baggage hall.

The terminal buildings were evacuated because of smoke. Approach roads were closed.

No one was injured although three people suffered smoke inhalation. Some 20 fire trucks are on site.

Operations are expected to remain suspended till 2pm. Services to Malta this morning have been delayed by hours as a result.
