As part of a series of initiatives aimed at further developing the game of basketball on our islands, the Malta Basketball Association is organising a top-level coaching clinic at the Ta’ Qali pavilion this weekend.

Supported by FIBA Europe, the coaching clinic will be conducted by Janez Drvaric, one of the most experienced coaches in the FIBA Europe coaching staff, the MBA announced in a statement.

Drvaric, from Slovenia, needs no introduction to the basketball scene, having been at the helm of several top teams including Cibona Zagreb, with the great Drazen Pet-rovic in the team, in the late eighties.

The main topics covered during the clinic will be cuts and positioning, basic 3 on 3 offensive plays, motion offence and developing a defensive concept.

Drvaric won the Euro Championships as part of the coaching staff with the ex-Yugoslavia senior squad and added Olympic silver and bronze medals to his collection.

He was also the national coach and technical director of Slovenia and the club head coach at Olimpija Ljubljana.

Michael Schwarz, the head of the FIBA Europe coaching department who had a spell in charge of German giants Bayern Munich, will also be in Malta this weekend.

Schwarz will address local coaches about the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate (FECC).

He will also give a presentation on how to make the most effective use of the interactive FIBA Europe coaching website.

The clinic, which is compulsory to all coaches of youth category teams (Under 14 to Under 23), is also open to those who are interested in improving their knowledge of the game.

Applications are to be sent by email to bvassallo@mba.org.mt.

The deadline is tomorrow.
