One person has died as two passenger trains collided head-on near the southern Austrian city of Graz.

Railway representative Helmut Wittmann said the accident killed one of the train engineers.

The Austrian Automobile Club said a 60-year-old female passenger has been flown by helicopter to hospital in a critical condition, while several others sustained less serious injuries.

Mr Wittmann said initial investigations suggested one of the engineers appeared to have overlooked a signal light.
