The BOV national champion-ships, comprising the Premier League and First Division, will start on Friday, June 5.

The summer trek, which includes the Super Cup and the Sportswriters Cup as well as the knock-out for all senior teams, will come to a close by the end of August.

Addressing the media at the Sports Complex in Tal-Qroqq, yesterday, ASA president Joe Caruana Curran said that this year the competitions were programmed to come to an end earlier than usual to allow for the preparation of the national team ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifiers in October.

Next year, which also includes the Olympic calendar, will be a busy one for the national team, Caruana Curran added while thanking sponsors Bank of Valletta for their constant support.

There will be six teams in the Premier League – Exiles, Neptunes, San Ġiljan, Sirens, Sliema and Valletta – and four in the First Division – Marsascala, Marsa-xlokk, Otters and Ta’ Xbiex.

Valletta and Sirens will meet on the first day, a match preceded by the lower division clash between Otters and Marsascala. A plum fixture on the second day is that between two of the top contenders for the league title, Neptunes and San Ġiljan.

Incidentally, the Saints have requested the ASA to adjust their fixtures to allow them to meet Exiles and Valletta during the period when they will be shorn of some of their youngsters who will be engaged in the European Games in Azerbaijan, in June.

This request was acceded to, the ASA said.

The format of the 2015 Premier League will be similar to that of last year.

There will be two rounds after which the six teams will be divided into the Championship Pool and Relegation Pool.

The top three sides will play each other to determine the champion while the last-placed of the bottom three teams will face the winner of the First Division in a best-of-three series to decide which team plays in the top tier next year.

The pairings for these competitions were drawn by Anthony Scicluna, BOV chief officer, and Caruana Curran.

“Once again, we are looking forward to three months of excitement in the water and we are sure that the level of the championship will again be very high,” Caruana Curran said.

On his part, the BOV official had words of praise for the Malta Under 17 side which qualified for the European Games in Baku and the excellent results obtained by the national team.

“We are now awaiting another season of pulsating fare that will keep fans glued to their seats until the very end of the season,” Scicluna said.

It was announced that the Super Cup match will officially herald the start of the summer season on June 3 and the BOV KO final will be played on August 22.

The ASA said a complete fixtures schedule for both divisions will be issued shortly.
