Another round from the road race championship, organised by the Malta Cycling Federation, was held at San Martin.

It was a day to remember for The Cyclist club rider Maurice Formosa as he placed first in the elite category to claim the honours at the demanding circuit.

Formosa pedalled home in one hour 49 minutes and two seconds to finish the race just ahead of Team Greens duo Christian Formosa (1:49:03) and Etienne Bonello (1:49:06).

Michelle Vella Wood, of Birkirkara St Joseph, continued with her winning form when she covered the distance in 1:22.34 ahead of Danica Bonello Spiteri, of Team Greens (1:23:43), and Stephanie Alden, of The Cyclist (1:24:49).

In the race for juniors, Mosta AF Sign Studio’s Kurt Muscat took the honours in 1:34.12.

Birkirkara SJ’s Shaun Galea followed Muscat home in 1:34:31 and Nicholas Attard Montalto, of The Cyclist, was third in 1:46:17.

Monica Cutajar (Mosta, 45:49) and Isaac Spiteri (Agones, 32:36) were the U-15 race winners.

Greens cyclist Joe Bonello (1:20:08) was again the winner in the Masters Over 40 race, Steven Andrew Bell, of The Cyclist (1:05:16), topped the Over 50 class and Mosta’s Emmanuel Camilleri won the Over 60 race in 1:09.23.

On Sunday, the second round from the time trial championship was held at Mrieħel with Birkirkara SJ cyclists dominating the show and claiming the major titles.

Wayne Spiteri won the Elite race for men and Vella Wood was first in the women’s event.

Their BSJ team-mate Galea completed a hat-trick by winning the race for juniors.

Spiteri cruised to a comfortable victory, showing he’s the one to beat over this discipline. He won the 24-kilometre chrono in 34 minutes, 47 seconds.

Spiteri’s team-mate Steve Sciberras was second in 36:24 and James Mifsud, of Team Greens, third in 36:28.

The women’s race was a closer affair as Team Greens cyclists Marie Claire Aquilina and Bonello Spiteri gave Vella Wood a good run for her money.

Vella Wood, however, won the race in 39:22 with Aquilina coming home second in 39:36 and Bonello Spiteri settling for third place on the day in 40:07.

Galea, meanwhile, made it two wins out of two in the juniors championship after reaching the gantry in 37:58. Mosta’s Muscat followed in 38:20 ahead of BSJ’s Benjamin Crisp in 42:08.
