Maltese driver Josef Calleja recently made his debut at the UK Time Attack Championship when taking part in the opening weekend from the series at the Cadwell Park Circuit, in Lincolnshire, England.

Calleja drove his Subaru Impreza in the Club 4WD category and clocked the third best time in the qualifiers behind Damien Bradley (Subaru Legacy) and Simon Griffiths (Mitsubishi Evo III). However, the Sunday finals had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

Time Attack championships are becoming more popular across the continent and in the UK the season is contested over six rounds.

In Time Attack events, race cars compete against a clock and not directly against each other. Each car is timed through one circuit of the track and there are no other cars on the tarmac at that time.

Calleja had his first taste of international racing a few years back when he took the challenge to race at the Racalmuto circuit in Sicily, first inside a Toyota Celica and then opting for his Subaru Impreza.

In Sicily, he won the PRO 4WD class titles in 2012 and 2013 and also established the best time, which still stands, during his races in the championship.

When the 2013 racing season was over, Calleja was convinced to take his Time Attack adventure to another level and shipped his Subaru to the UK where modifications were made by Chevron Motorsports in Stafford.

The works required several months to complete but at the Cadwell Park Circuit results were encouraging and now Calleja is looking to build on that at the next series in Snetterton.

Races at the Norfork circuit will be held on May 31.

The season wraps up in Rockingham on September 19.
