A drug addict was today placed on probation for two years after admitting to stealing €334 from his mother.

Matthew Falzon, 30, from Zabbar, stole the cash from his mother's residence because he needed money to fund his drug addiction.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard how the man has realised he had a drug addiction problem and was willing to do whatever it took to kick the habit. She also noted that the man had cooperated with the police during their investigations.

The man's mother had initially asked the court to impose a protection order because she felt threatened but today renounced for this, saying there was no need.

Magistrate Clarke warned Mr Falzon that he was being given a chance to kick the habit and that there would be serious consequences if he failed to observe the conditions of his probation order.

Police Inspector Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.
