I refer to the editorial of April 24 entitled ‘Who exactly is defending the consumers’.

Reference was made to the Consumers’ Association. The editorial raised the questionof whether the association pressed the MCCAA to speed up the investigation.

The association had written to the MCCAA on several occasions, urging it to expedite the investigation due to its economic effect not only on the consumers but on thewhole economy.

We had written to the MCCAA first on January 28, 2015, asking for an investigation not only on the sale of diesel but on the fuel market in Malta as we believe that there is an organised cartel both in the diesel and petrol market.

Further to this, we again contacted the MCCAA to see the state of play of the investigation on March 2, 29 and April 15.

Moreover, on one of our submissions to the European Commission, we also informed them that this issue has been pending for the last three months. This is to show that the Consumers’ Association has followed this complaint and will continue to do so in the future.

We take this opportunity to inform readers that the association is not represented on the MCCAA board of governors. This is to clarify the insinuation of a timesofmalta.com blogger that the association is staying put on this issue as it is part and parcel of the authority.
